Since the epidemic of vaping-related respiratory illness keeps growing -- with all the death toll now at 26 -- health officials are advising all to prevent vaping products (particularly those containing THC).
The outbreak, which to date involves mainly people under the age of 35 , continues to be a wake-up call concerning the dangers of vaping, both long-term and acute -- especially for users that are habitual. It shown another unsettling issue: We have no clear evidence on the best way best to help young people quit is using oil vape pen. "We do not have any literature," Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, a Yale professor of psychiatry who studies adolescent tobacco usage, told Vox. "There are not any published [studies] on vaping cessation in childhood." Yet young men and women are away and far the majority consumers of nicotine e-cigarettes. Along with the trend belies a terrible irony: E-cigarettes were originally marketed as a means to help smokers stop. It is not clear just how many youths are addicted to their apparatus -- but Reddit communities and stories suggest it's an issue. So what can teenagers, and parents who want to aid them, do in the lack of evidence? There's a literature on what works to help youth get off cigarettes. Krishnan-Sarin states for now, tobacco and she and addiction experts are extrapolating to help patients who want to give up vaping. But there's a twist: The expertise of quitting smoking vaping might turn out to be rather different from stopping smoking. Quitting vaping might actually be harder. Why quitting vaping might be more difficult than ditching cigarettes There's a case that vaping is a monster that is different which it could actually be harder to quit vaping. "There are unique aspects of e-cigarette apparatus, especially ones like the Juul, which may facilitate addiction," explained Rachel Grand Mayne, the program director in the Tobacco Control and Research Branch at the National Institutes of Health. "Many of those devices contain high levels of nicotine and are smoother to inhale." Every pod, for instance, carries 59 mg of nicotine per milliliter of liquid. Juul Labs -- manufacturer of the cigarette around the US marketplace -- claims one pod is equal to a pack of cigarettes in terms of nicotine. Considering you can undergo a pod in less than a few hours of usage that is chronic, that is a good deal of nicotine. The nicotine in these products also goes smoothly than cigarettes. The reason: Juul vaporizes a liquid that contains nicotine salts. Unlike the smoking nicotine salt doesn't cause those unpleasant feelings. "This invention in nicotine chemistry might be crucial with regard to this addictiveness" of e-cigarette pods such as Juul, according to a perspective piece from the New England Journal of Medicine.
