In the great debate about the sustainability of different types of packaging materials, PET won with a few outstanding advantages - by avoiding wastage to being completely recyclable, light, strong, flexible and easy to transport. PET, stands for polyethylene terephthalate, is a sort of polyester. It is extruded or moulded into plastic bottles and containers for packaging foods and beverages, personal care products, and many other consumer products. The basic building blocks of PET are ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, which are united to form a polymer chain. The consequent spaghetti-like strands of PET are extruded, quickly cooled, and cut into small pellets. The resin pellets are then heated to a molten liquid that can be easily extruded or moulded to things of practically any shape. From the late 1950s, researchers found a way to extend a thin extruded sheet of PET in two ways to create PET film, which is now used extensively for video, photo and packaging pictures. In the early 1970s, the technology was developed for blow-stretch moulding PET to ribbons. Particular Properties of PET It is strong yet lightweight, non-reactive, economical, and shatterproof. PET is sterile and resistant to attack by micro-organisms, does not react with foods or beverages, and won't biologically degrade. Its excellent barrier properties mean it protects food and beverage products from contamination, water and grime without leeching any poisonous material. Furthermore, it is biologically inert if ingested, safe during handling and not a hazard if inhaled. It is safe, flexible and fully recyclable, and it can also help beverage manufacturers reduce their carbon footprint and bring about a more sustainable industry while growing sales at the same moment. Programs of PET PET bottles are popular for packaging sodas, water, juices, salad dressings, cooking oil, peanut butter, shampoo, liquid hand soap, mouthwash, pharmaceuticals, even tennis balls. PET plastic bottles are a popular selection for packaging soft drinks because of the various benefits they offer both to manufacturers and consumers. 70% of soft drinks are currently packaged in PET plastic bottles -- the rest comes mainly in glass bottles, metal cans and cartons. PET is being used for food and beverage containers for decades without any known adverse consequences. Extensive studies of PET and PET packaging have repeatedly shown that it be safe. PET has been approved as safe for contact with foodstuffs and beverages by the FDA, Health Canada, and the European Food Safety Authority. Recycling and Sustainability PET is recyclable and highly sustainable. PET can be retrieved, and the material reused, through a series of special washing procedures or with a chemical treatment to break down the PET to its raw materials or intermediates, which are then processed and converted to new PET resin. It can be recovered and recycled back into containers for foods, beverages and personal care goods or to carpet and clothing fibers, automotive parts, construction materials, industrial strapping or other packaging materials. Approximately 1.5 billion pounds of used PET bottles and containers are collected each year for recycling which makes PET the very recycled plastic. The high strength of PET in comparison to its light weight is a major key to its own energy efficiency, allowing for more products to be delivered in less packaging and with less fuel for transport. Life cycle studies of PET have consistently confirmed the environmental benefits of PET as a packaging material. From the 60 years since PET was initially synthesized, it has turned into one of the world's most widely used, versatile and reliable packaging materials.
